when my grandmother was alive, she would often swear and use yiddish phrases throughout the day to gvetch (complain) about others if they did something she felt was unacceptable. at times, i would ask her to translate the yiddish to english. let me tell you, these people are great with the insults. i mean, i might call someone “stupid” but in yiddish, you get something like, “you grow like an onion, with your head in the ground.”
so, i found this link on blogdex to a page that lists common swear words, insults, and curses in yiddish. these are great! my favorite so far is, “zalts im in di oygen, feffer im in di noz” which translates to, “throw salt in his eyes, pepper in his nose.” i mean, what else is left to say! you gotta love yiddish.
